BOOKS & LINKS for FUN & ERUDITION
All these are favorites, one way or the other. Simple sojourns into the wild and mysterious which give me joy and which I am delighted to share.
Books There are so many books out there - these are just a few of my more unusual favorites.
MYTHOLOGIES by William Butler Yeats
This book stands alone.
Oh, that everyone wrote with the lyric beauty and whimsy of Yeats.
This is one of my favorite books. A must for all who relish journeys
through the landscape of Celtic mysteries.
THE DRAGON GREEN by J. Bissell Thomas
This book is a treasure. (see Rare Beings)
Unfortunately, it is currently out of print, but if you frequent
used bookstores, keep your eyes peeled! You never know...
A FIELD GUIDE TO DEMONS by Carol K. Mack & Dinah Mack
A wonderfully mischievous look to those beings who play around
the darker edges of our imaginations.
A FIELD GUIDE TO THE LITTLE PEOPLE by Nancy Arrowsmith & George Moorse
Recently reissued treasure for all who take delight with the wee folke.
BRITISH DRAGONS by Jacqueline Simpson
Scholarly but not dry. A fine look at the lore of Anglo-Celtic Dragons.
DRAGONHENGE by Bob Eggleton & John Grant
A wonderfully spiritual collection of Dragon lore beautifully illustrated.
DRAGON-LOVER'S TREASURY OF THE FANTASTIC ed. by Margaret Weis
For younger readers--solid tales of fun and fancy.
DRAGONS: A MODERN INFESTATION by Pamela Wharton Blanpied
A most curious book - one of the few I've come across which actually
deals with Dragons as real creatures in the modern world. Unfortunately,
this very serious, almost scientific volume sees Dragons as a a threat to humankind -
a threat to be dealt with. It will raise the blood pressure of die-hard Dracophiles.
THE ELEMENT ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MAGICAL CREATURES by John & Caitlin Matthews
This massive tome covers the rare and unusual from around the globe.
A fine reference book (though lacking in illustrations).
ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF VAMPIRES, WEREWOLVES & OTHER MONSTERS
by Rosemary Ellen Guiley & Jeanne Keyes Youngson
A look at the more dangerous among us.
FABULOUS BEASTS by Malcolm Ashman
A beautifully illustrated bestiary for our time.
MAGICKAL, MYSTICAL CREATURES by D.J.Conway
A favorite of mine. From Unicorns & flying equines to
water folk and gargoyles, this book looks at not only the lore of these
beings, but also their magickal powers and how to tap into those powers.
MONSTERS by John Michael Greer
Personally, I take umbrage at Mr. Greer's designation of Monsters,
but, hey, that's just me. It's an expansive and well-written book;
a fun reference volume.
PERN TOMES by Anne McCaffrey
I would include her A Diversity of Dragons, charming and beautifully illustrated.
What can one say about Anne McCaffrey's books? She's done more for Dragonkind
than almost anyone I know. Wonderful!
PIT DRAGON CHRONICLES by Jane Yolen
Some writers capture our fancy--Jane Yolen does that with me. Excellent reads.
THE BOOK OF DRAGONS by E. Nesbit
E. Nesbit was someone I read since I was a tyke. Who can resist a woman
who walks with Psammeads and Phoenix?!
As timeless as Narnia!
THE ENCHANTED FOREST CHRONICLES by Patricia Wrede
I am a relative newcomer to Ms. Wrede's work, but enjoy it
immensely. For younger readers but with enough wit to grab us elders.
THE LORE OF THE UNICORN by Odell Shepard
I discovered this book in one of my favorite used bookstores.
What a find!
A wise and witty look at our monocere friends full of myth and whimsy.
If you love Unicorns, check it out.
THE OAK KING, THE HOLLY KING & THE UNICORN
by John Williamson
This is a serious scholarly work on the symbolism and iconography in
the Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries. Dense but fascinating, especially if
you have a liking for the subtleties of medieval botany.
